Preventing Injuries During the Holiday Season

In addition to the dreaded (and easily avoidable) holiday weight-gain, we have to be concerned about an increased risk of injury. Increased stress levels during the holidays affect the entire body, as stress can exacerbate neck and back problems. If you’re flying or driving a long distance to your Thanksgiving dinner, get out of your seat and move around frequently (but not while you are driving). While cooking, remember to take breaks and adjust your posture. Carrying heavy platters of food, or reaching for a high cabinet can also cause injuries. And working in the kitchen all week chopping and cutting can lead to overuse injuries in the wrist and elbow. Lastly, drinking too much can lead to falls, overeating, and saying things to your in-laws that you’ll regret. Use caution and have a happy and healthy holiday season.
